In 2003 Shug started life as a demonstrator van for VW Glasgow South – at that time based in Rutherglen. It was purchased in 2004 by a Rutherglen baker who used it lightly from then until he retired in 2018. It was his son (Ross) that brought the van to me in December of 2018 asking for advice on how best to sell the van.
At that stage I wasn’t really interested in buying another van. I was about to start a house build and was also busy with converting vans for customers. But I couldn’t resist having a look and was genuinely interested in helping Ross get a decent price. Ross brought the van round and we went for a drive. I told Ross what I thought the van would get on the open market. But I also couldn’t resist making an offer for a bit below that. Ross was happy with my offer and without really planning for it I had a new van. (I’d also spent the money I had put aside for the new house kitchen but hey ho – that’s a while off.)
One of the reasons I was interested in the van was because of it’s history. Not many vans of that age have had such a light use and have had only one owner from new.
The van – as it was brought to me in 2018 – had covered just 48000 miles. And it had been extensively serviced. There was some minor body work to be dealt with but the chassis had been wax oiled at some stage so the underside was in surprisingly good condition.
There were also a few of other key features which made the van tempting to buy.
- Colour – the van is original VW Ice Blue.
- Front seats – genuine factory fitted captains seats up front.
- Tailgate – nine out of ten T4’s are in barn door configuration.
Whilst not 100% complete the service history below is exceptionally comprehensive for a van if this age. It shows that the original owner serviced the van annually instead of waiting for the milage to tell him he needed a service. And I am pretty confident that the missing years are down to missing paperwork as opposed to the van not being serviced.
When I purchased the van I couldn’t see any record of cam belt or water pump having been done so I took it straight to VW in Darnley and got that done.
